I think this is a good place for it.

I thought it was pretty good. Michael Fassbender did a good performance showing all of his "stuff". The movie takes a good turn in showing how bad an addiction like this he has. I think Fassbender should have gotten something for this, but now we know he wont. Plus lot of nakedness, and Fassbender made me feel small.

I thought this was a pretty good movie about the Tuskegee airmen. Though the actors in it seem pretty new and that might be a choice much like from Star Wars to cast unknown actors. The action though was excellent and I know the dog fighting is goign to be compared to Star Wars, but really they took it from World War II footage of real dog fights. The only jarring thing is that I saw it in regular film projection. Had it been shown in a digital theater or gotten the IMAX treatment it would have looked so much prettier.

I thought this was a pretty entertaining movie. Gina Carano displayed ass-kicking action chops. And unlike just a regular actress learning to fight for a movie, Gina really know how to kick ass. But unlike a regular actress, she did not act too well since this is her very first movie. Wasn't bad though I just went along for the right. I know people are going to see it and say it is the worst Steven Sodenbergh movie. But I thought it was good and it kept me interested. I hope Gina doesn't get the direct-to-DVD treatment, but I like to see her in more things. I think they should go ahead and make her Wonder Woman. :x
  • Midnight in Paris

    8/10

A really awesome concept that focuses on a writer in Paris.  Every night at Midnight he is transported to Paris during the 1920's where he meets a host of famous writers and painters.  Owen Wilson as always played himself but it works for this story.  A really simple but enjoyable film.

    Contagion

    6.5/10

This story focuses on a plague-like disease starting when it first appears in the human population and moving on until society begins to fall apart.  Overall the concept was interesting but the story seemed rather pieced together instead of flowing.  Seemed too unfocused.  Should have narrowed the scope.

    Kill List

    7/10

An OK British film about hired killers. Don't know the cast member's names at the top of my head (one of the killers played Tyres in 'Spaced'), but they do a good job. The film is dark and creepy, and it gets pretty surreal near the end, and the ending is.... well I won't spoil it.

Thought it was better than ok. Felt it was a superbly visceral tale and one of the best things I saw last year.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was very good in his role as a mid-twenties guy who is suddenly diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.  He really does a good job of what I imagine the emotions would be like if I were going through something like that.  Seth Rogan almost ruins it though.  His ability to not only play himself almost got in the way of  Joseph's performance.

The Queen Of Outer Space (1958)
This might be the worst film that I have ever seen in my life ... and in that context, there was fun to be had.  Most of the way, I wished the MST3K robots were hanging out with me.  B-movie SciFi from the 1950s, with the worst sexism of the era, not to mention the science!
    2 on a scale of 20.

Dialog included one of the male Earth astronauts speaking about the women of Venus: "Even if they invented it, how could they drive it. You know how women drivers are"

Ooh, my wife despised this film, but black comedy has never been her thing.
This works very well as a black comedy, but I caught it on TV and wished I'd had subtitles to get me off the a running start. My primary problem (and it may have been my problem) was how long it took me to get to know the individual characters. Aside from Omar and Barry, the relationships between the others took awhile for me.

I saw this recently too and I rate it about the same as you GAB. I think it suffered from overhype with me since I'd heard it praised to the heavens for months before I saw it and it didn't live up to that hype. The jokes themselves are generally very broad and not particularly sharp and if it wasn't for the shock value that comes with the fact those average jokes are tacked onto this very non-average comedic subject matter I think we're looking at a fairly run-of-the-mill piece of comedy writing.

I do give them significant props for having the balls to actually take on the subject matter though. And the performances were really solid. And I have a soft spot for Chris Morris too, so I give it another couple of ratings notches for that bias.

In my opinion, possibly the best film to watch when half-drunk, half-asleep. Yes, the costumes look like I made them and my next-door neighbour could do better special effects when he was 10 but oh my God, what a monumentally fun film. Oh yeah and it has Clancy Brown. Win.

Meh. I don't like Cameron's films. Or well, I don't love 'em for sure. As usual, too long action scenes, silly dialog and plain dumb names. Seen that all on Terminator, right? Anyhow, since it is such a long film I had time to think about all things had 'borrowed'. A planet with a huge life tree on it called Pandora? Anyone played Secret Of Mana? No? Even then you might know that their world is called Pandora and that the Mana-series is centered around a tree. Since 1992. Just saying. Then the night-elves. Yes, Warcraft, again inspirtaion drawm out of a videogame. It's quite obvious how the "blue elves" in Avatar (or are they purple? Colourblind person typing, sorry)  have many similarities with the Dranei. And then there's the obvious Dances With Wolves.

Now, everything borrows from everything of course. And I can understand why you'd go Elves-route, not Dwarves-route when you want to have a romance. But one conclusion I did draw: Avatar did nothing new.

Sure, didn't saw it in 3D. But on principal I don't like 3D. Not because of 3d, but due to the discrimination against people who can't see 3D, of which there are many, many more than you probably realise. In origin, humans relie on five sense  to hunt plus their intelligence. And it seems to may especially the more intelligent have bad or no 3D vision among us. Which sort of makes sense: vision is highly overrated in our world unfortunately. On saturday, my city was covered in snow. The first thing I remarked when I got out was how quiet it was. Then I noticed the snow... So, I guess I'm more auditive...

Anyhow. I'd rather see a film with dranei and humans in it. And no, I never played WoW.

What can I say? You probably like it if you like Cameron films.

    I don't like Cameron films.

Though I was getting into the struggle they were having out in the wilderness and agaisnt the wolves of the wild. I thought it had me in suspence of weather people were going to live or die. Felt invested in the movie. Then the ending happened and it all fell apart for me. Would have gotten more then 3 if the ending was different.

    Underworld: Awakening 4/5 stars
I liked it very much. Had few common tropes in it, but it was all good and entertaining. I think the only thing that got me was the Scott Speedman "appearance". Was bit lame.

Fairly bland vampire hunter movie with the slight variation being that the vampires are more Alien like than human. Highlight for me was when we are introduced to the main city and it's called Cathedral City and I thought, yup, big slice of cheese.

Finally got to the movies for the first time since the baby was born.  Underworld: Awakening was quite an enjoyable film.  We didn't see it in 3D...I didn't even know that was an option...but if you liked the other Underworld films then you should dig this one.  Pretty vampires, especially Kate Beckinsale. Scary, if rather badly CGI werewolves.  Cheesy B-movie dialogue and plot, but it moves at a breakneck pace and the action is nonstop.  I doubt we have to worry about any Oscar or BAFTA noms, but it should do well at the MTV Movie awards.  3/5 stars.
  • Saw "Gnomeo & Juliet" animated movie about two yards of different color wearing gnomes who hate each other and the star crossed love of two young'ns.  Only when people aren't around can they all come to life and move around.  Not a bad little film but not an Wall-E or Toy Story quality movie.  A whole lot of subtle Shakespeare references like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern moving company that flashes by on a truck.  Sir Patrick Stewart has a cameo as voice of a statue of the bard. And Ozzy Osbourne gets to voice a character and is really rather coherent.

    3/5 stars.

Oh God not another "found footage" film might be the first reaction for many people to this movie, and it is ture, the gimmich is getting old.  This film isn't all about the found footage though.  It has enough good parts in it to stand alone.  This film isn't particularly innovative in any way.  It tells the story of a troubled teen whose mother is dying and whose father is an abbusive asshole who suddenly stumples into a hole with his cousin and the most popular guy in school.  Down in that hole they find a unexplained thing that gives them telekinetic power.  It seems like it should be a massive cliche but after seeing this thing it felt fresh and like a brilliantly told story.

I don't like the "found footage" movie stuff. So even with this premise I don't feel compelled to see it.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Alright I know hate for this movie, I don't care I like it well enough and I saw it. Pretty much still the same but I thought the 3D conversion was pretty good. And I guess a lot of people thought so, it was half way pack for a Saturday that has other new movies opened.

Man On A Ledge 3 out of 5 stars
Pretty simple suspense movie. Some twist and turns but I was entertained. Sam Worthington still can't pull an American accent.

Journey 2 Mysterious Island 4 out 5 stars
Pretty wild ride movie from beginning to end. Had some nice visuals, but I think I was in a bad theater because it looked cut off at both sides and not wide screened. I should have asked about it to see if that is suppose to be like that. Very worth a watch in 3D. I did not see it in IMAX but I think I'll take a trip to see it all the way proper.

    The Muppets 9/10

I had an absolute ball watching this. They perfectly balanced the references to the previous films with telling an entertaining story. While the story isn't exactly original; The Muppets have to reunite to put on a show to save their studio, they acknowledge the fact with a few winks at the camera. Some of the songs were a bit hit and miss but if you have ever been a fan of the Muppets, you can easily forgive them. I admit I did get a little choked up at the end which is a testament to how well these characters are portrayed. The tears turned to glee when the movie closed on one of my favourite songs of the Muppet oeuvre.

A perfect film for the lovers, the dreamers and me. :D
  • Phantom Menace 3D.

I'm not going to score it. You already know if you like it or not. The 3D didn't change the quality of the film in the least. Nor did the extra scenes....although, I must say, CGI Yoda was a massive improvement from muppet Yoda.... For me, going to see TPM was about sharing the Star Wars universe on the big screen with my kids. I was going to see Star Wars on the big screen anyway, but both kids weren't even born for the release of this first time round...And say what you want about Jar Jar....my kids love him....=And so does Amanda....but she's also an Ewok lover!

Some of the 3D was actually really good. Some of the shots on Coruscant, the senate pod thingys and the Gungan Vs Battle Droids fight in particular stood out for me as good 3D used correctly. A lot of it was hardly noticable though....which, in my opinion is how it should be. Not constantly in your face. Just now and then thinking "oooh. Now that's effective!"

I was looking forward to the pod race in 3D. And whilst the podrace did interest me, it wasn't for the 3D which i found to be underwhelming. The new edit of this scene was like I'd never seen it before though. The new CGI and the extra scenes...it really held my attention. Whereas the family just loved the race...

There's not a lot I can say. I've always been able to see the faults in the prequels. But I think people give them all a harder time than they deserve. Besides, I just love being in the Star wars universe on big screen....can't wait for Clone wars....but really REALLY looking forward to the original trilogy....it just seems so long to wait!!

My preferred scale for rating films is very simple RECommended, MEH, or NOT.  Better than a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, but one that sidesteps the time spent -- or, sometimes, wasted -- trying to put a number on things.

Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows (or something like that ... just call it "2") is a pretty good example of MEH for me.  In The Middle, for want of a better expression.

Don't get me wrong.  Robert Downey Jr. is always good value.  Jude Law is fine in this role.  There is a ton of action and an intricate plot.  It just felt more like a Bourne or Bond film to me.  Why I like that with Bourne but not so much with Holmes ... probably says more about me than the movie.

Very good title sequence and graphics.
  • "MEH" is a very adaptable non specific though. "MEH" going up in tone is a hell of a lot more positive than a slower drawn out "MEH" that drops down in tone.

I think you should differentiate with a "MEH+" or a "MEH-"

Dragging me into a 4-star system against my better judgment, I see.

    :P :P

I'd say it was Meh+ in the theater, having a good enough time on the joyride, but Meh- on the drive home realizing that it was nowhere near as satisfying ... like empty calories.

    So, I give Sherlock Holmes 2 a 3 out of 6 rating, I suppose.

  • In Time 3/10

The Concept of this film involves a world in which humans when they reach the age of 25 have a clock that is constantly counting down.  They can only live longer by getting more time.  Time is the currensy where some people have centuries and some have minutes.  This film follows our main character who lives in the poorest area, or "time zone" who is suddenly given the gift of time by a man who no longer wishes to live.  Overall the idea was really good but the execution was just awful.  It punched you in the face with its symbolism, the plot jumped all over the place, and the acting was bad all around.  Even Justin Timberlake, who has been good in most things, was off his game.  Dont' bother.

  • That's a shame. The trailer looked fantastic and, as you say, Justin Timberlake is usually good in most things. Oh well....

Lived up to every bit of praise it received. Such a wonderful, uplifting film that is a true joy to watch. I left the theater and my face was hurting from smiling so much. • Hugo 9/10

This movie focuses on Hugo, an orphan who secretly keeps the clocks running at a train station in paris now that his drunk uncle has dissapeared.  His one goal in life is to fix an automaton that his father was working on before he died in a fire.  While attempting to do so he uncovers a great mystery that he must solve with the help of a friend he meets along the way.  Overall I loved this film.  The way it was shot was magical.  Rent it if you haven't already seen it.

    The Muppets - 7/10

Started off really well with some great songs and a nice idea, but I got bored in the last 40 minutes.Felt too self-referential to truly appeal to a new audience and a little bit too cutesy to please older fans. Still enjoyable, it just didn't match the hype. I definitely liked it though. And it has some wicked cameos.

    Chronicle 3/4 stars

The premise was pretty good. Better then most of the original superhero genre that have been done. It play out like a regular movie accept a lot of the camera work is done hand cam footage. And I think the the hand cam style is what did let rank it higher. I felt it was more distracting with that style. Other wise I think it was a pretty good story.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3/5 stars

This was more of a reboot then just a sequel. Few things were cool about it and some visuals but the story could been better especially by the guys that did the Crank movies and Gamer. I don't many here will like it, I thought it was entertaining enough with a few element from the comics.

    This Means War  3/4 stars

I think for the most part this was good action flick with Tom Hardy and Chris Pine. The other part that was not good was the "rom com" with Reese Weatherspoon. Though they were funny parts of them fighting over her I think it was the weak parts of the movie. Especially parts with Chelsea Handler. I would like to see a sequel with just Tom Hardy and Chris Pine being sort of a new spy action movie.

    Arrietty 3/4 stars

It was an OK anime, nothing really too special about the animation and story.

    The Lorax 3/4 stars

This was of course different then what the original books was. Mostly because the original story was very short. It fit it's style of Dr Suess in this world. I didn't think it was worth the 3D though.

    Wanderlust 3/4 stars

A comedy with Paul Rudd, Jennifer Aniston directed by Role Model's David Wain. I thought iti was funny but not as funny as Role Models. The acting in it was good but I think the story was just a bit weak for me.

Surprisingly good action comedy. Jonah Hill is really trying to break out of his 'Superbad' persona and Channing Tatum acts as a good foil for him. Although there dynamic has been seem a million times before they both do fairly well in the roles and it seems like they could easily do a sequel. In the category of "Worth a buy when it goes to £5"

    The Hunger Games
    1/5 star

I thought it was a horrible movie. It was overly boring, I couldn't get into the characters at all. I thought the camera work was shotty at best. Don't think I've ever looked at the time during a movie before waiting for it to end. I even tweeted during it  too. The acting was fine, costumes were OK, but other then that I just thought it was horrible. . I put the Twilight movies above likability over The Hunger Games. Even Jack and Jill had very few entertaining moments, The Hunger Games just wasn't.

I should have gone to see John Carter 3D a second time but me and my friend decided to see this since it was new. Big mistake.

  • Recently saw a few films, either by being forced to go or of my own free will.

The Hunger Games- This movie stays pretty true to the book, while delving into politics that were covered in the books sequel. The cast works well together, and even though Katniss was quiet, she had the intensity of the character to back it up. The only problem I had was with all the violent scenes being obscured my shakey-cam. There are different techniques to shooting a scene if you don't want it to be graphic. Instead they decided to rattle the camera around until you got dizzy, then keep it motionless for all the dialogue scenes. All in all a great movie plot and acting wise, but not a very solid filiming direction.

The Three Stooges-My parents forced me to watch this with them recently. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it was a carbon copy of previous Stooges episodes and gags. They even include the cheesy sound effects. The idea of these three men dressed in fifties style in a world full of modernly dressed people with Iphones annoyed me. But the actors commited themselves to the characters, and got a few laughs out of me. Larry David as a nun was the saving grace of this movie.

At the risk of looking like a bandwagon rider The Avengers was frakking awesome!! Joss Whedon handles the full plate of egos like a conductor with a symphony. Great action, not-too-complicated plot, and solid performances all around. He even slips in a very vulgar Shakespearian insult and no one noticed. Even two days after seeing it I don't have a bad word to say about the film.  We saw it in 2D and didn't feel we missed out on anything, nor were there any moments when it was clear they were doing things just for the 3D crowd, so bravo.  Oh, and make sure you stay for both post credits scenes.  I rarely do this, but The Avengers gets 5/5 from me.

I caught The Artist on a plane flight, and figured it would be a good way to manage the potential for dodgy sound in that "flying coach" situation.  I loved it, including the music. To be fair, though, the plot owes a very large debt to Singin' In The Rain.  Picked my favorite part of that movie to build the story upon, which is good.
    Simple story. Beautifully told.
17 out of 18, as in the years that D.W. Griffith made Birth Of A Nation and Intolerance, respectively.

The Avengers on opening weekend could have been a disastrous movie-going choice, but our cinema experience was thankfully better than most people seem to get in that situation.
I won't say much, except that the variety of characters was well managed, Mark Ruffalo may be my favorite Bruce Banner of all time, and I felt like they made Black Widow more than just eye-candy (which is not easy to do when you cast Scarlett J. in the role!).
Downside: a couple of times the fight sequences were too tight to display the choreography of it all.
Upside: there were moments (plural) where I really felt like the comic-graphics were put onto film, particularly one where 3 of The Avengers step on the the street and look up at the adversaries from the ground-up.

I watched Election last night.  I recently revisited Sideways and watched it twice in a week, and decided to put Alexander Payne's catalogue on notice.

Very much enjoyed, mostly because it didn't matter if I was 1/3rd, 1/2 or 3/4s of the way through the film, I still had no idea where it was going or how it was going to end.  Not a lot of movies you can say that for.  Much love for the Brodrick who completely escapes his "cool" Beuler persona... although the last word of the film might be a homage to it.  Miss Witherspoon likewise nailed her character.
