The Book Club returns for a fascinating discussion of books that have been adapted for the screen — a favourite topic here at Books You Should Read. You know how it is; sometimes it works (A Simple Plan, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Joy Luck Club, The Shining) and sometimes it doesn’t (Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins). Sometimes, a good book can become a good film even with major changes (The Bourne Identity). But as long as people keep writing books, Hollywood will keep mining them for stories. In fact, this episode is extra-long because of the number of possible films to discuss … and the Book Club barely scratched the surface. Brought you by Audible.

Forget chess clubs, forget spelling bees, forget matheletes and band camp, if you want to discuss nerdy school activities, citing the debate team itself is a strong argument.

Our listeners are awesome. They are awesome and terrifying.
This week, they shell us with questions. Omar is completely broken. He’s recovering in a military hospital now after seeing the horrors of the Atomic Trivia War unleashed by those pinko commies we call fans.
Yes, fans forced us into the trenches. They rolled tanks over our fortifications. They drove us to the wall. They proved our pitiful strategies and limited intelligence were no match for the Internet zeitgeist. Our kung fu is strong, but their trivia is stronger. We fell to their mighty question submissions. We were mowed down like so many blades of grass before Hannibal’s elephant cavalry.
You may have won the battle, Internet. But you have not won the war. We will continue to fight, week in and week out, bringing our pitiful trivia ammo to bear. May whatever gods we believe in have mercy on our souls.
Keep sending those questions to atw9k@simplysyndicated.com.

In this episode Allison and Nigel talk about the equipment stocked by Needle and Syringe Programmes (NSPs) and how the range goes way beyond needles and syringes. They talk about finding the right needle for each injector and each injecting site, and the differences between pharmacy needle exchanges and fixed site NSPs. They also spend some time talking about the good, the bad and the ugly of NSP design and practice, and getting creative with mixed media messages.

Roll: 4-5-9
Album: Six Organs of Admittance, The Sun Awakens
I used to spend a lot of time at a record store called Black Ball Records. Most of the year I was on the dole after getting turfed from my job due to a nervous breakdown, was spent sitting on the green chair meant for their listening station. I didn’t listen to music in the green chair, I just listened to the owners Jack and Andrew and they listened to me. Mostly they listened to me whinge about my untenable domestic situation. In exchange for their counseling services, I bought a lot of records.
None of them were by Six Organs of Admittance.

We did our very best to record this show on time. Unfortunately it was raining in Canada and the Grand Prix was put on hold. We just had to see how it went. Anyway there’s some sort of tech show here somewhere. Read on for the extended show notes, and please tweet if you like the show.

Once again chaos reigns on the Starbase as the crew open the mailbag.
Show notes:
Written to the Starbase lately? And by “lately,” we mean since…oh, around February of this year? Then this might be your lucky week!
That’s right, the Starbase crew finally receive all those subspace communications that our listeners have been sending us. Seems that Chuck in the Mailroom (second cousin once removed of Dave in the Brig) was accidentally rerouting communiques to the wrong place! So if you’ve received a response from us recently, ignore it. Turns out, someone named “Kiki Velour” was getting our messages and responding to them. Don’t worry, though. The Admiral sent the Bajoran militia after Kiki and all is well again. Chuck, however, might appreciate being brought back in from his…accidental spacing. Read More »
