Business so big, and serious…that it cannot be contained by this column.

And thus begins a post we never really wanted to write. Let’s get the facts out of the way to make everything clear, then we will do what we do best – ramble.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Synners, Shaolin Monks Of Woof Clang, the 100th episode of the Here Goes Nothing podcast (at time of writing we have just released Episode 97) will be the final episode. There. That’s the big news. At least 6 of you are inconsolable right now.

So with that out of the way, allow us to explain. We are all part of the same community here and we want you, our family, to understand why HGN is coming to an end. The first point we want to make is the most important. NOTHING WENT WRONG! Nobody has fallen out with anyone(Mock The Weak excepted. Twats.), creative differences didn’t drive a wedge. Hell, it wasn’t even the fact nobody enters our competitions! Boz and Casey were and remain the very best of friends, and lay to rest their podcast with nothing but pride and hugely happy memories, metallic and otherwise. The simple motivating factor behind the decision to finish is our pride in the show. Time constraints and real life pressures (well-documented, we won’t go into them again.#fuckcancer)have encroached to the point where we didn’t feel we were able to produce the podcasts we wanted to. The skits (oh, how we love skittage) became few and far between, and in the end we became two tired boys trying to be spontaneous and funny at 1am after full working days. We always promised to each other, as two guys who were constantly annoyed at some of the ultra-amateurish and content-free podcasts available at the bottom of the iTunes Store barrel, that if the quality suffered or the show felt like a job…we’d bow out with our dignity intact. That time has come, as sad as were are to admit it.

Another important point that we want to stress, however, is that this doesn’t mean the end of Boz and Casey at Simply Syndicated. If anything, this gives us more scope to work on new things for the network. Rich has given us very generous and warm assurance that there is always a place on the SimSyn airwaves for us, and we are excited at the potential of this. We are Synners, and we’re not going anywhere.

We are certainly not planning to retire HGN quietly. Planning is already well underway for a finale that does justice to the previous 99. We are going out with laughter and beer, the way we came in, and we’d love you all to join us in saying goodbye.

So just before we sign off, we’d like to again say a HUGE thank you to Simply Syndicated for the opportunity to realise a dream of ours. We began as fans of the network and ended up on the show schedule. The whole thing has been such a joy, we cannot emphasise how much our time as a Federation show has meant. In the same way that without the late Mr Jobs many of us wouldn’t have come across podcasts, in the same way Casey wouldn’t have the best friend he now does, and if you really analyse it, Boz probably wouldn’t have re-discovered the lost love of his life. Sounds crazy, but it is true. And one hundred episodes of the silliest show SimSyn has ever put its name to. What a ride, and a fitting point to bow out. We love each and every single one of you that gave us a chance. Now let’s make these last episodes count.

See, that’s the trouble with the UK. Just don’t have that effortless American cool when it comes to loud music through screaming guitars. We may not have the climate or the accents, but when it comes to venues, we rock HARD! In lieu of Simply SyndiFest, which was due to be held….now (sigh), this is a little tribute to the spiritual home of that most wondrous of things, the British summer rock festival. I speak of Donington Park (power chords)…

This weekend sees the start of the 2011 Download Festival at Donington Park Motorsport Circuit, Leicestershire. 70,000 fans are expected to attend for the 3 day festival, and a diverse lineup (Pendulum, anyone?) across many stages are due to perform. Download has been held at Donington since 2003, and gets bigger each year. Skateboarding demos and many other activities have turned it into a safe, welcoming mini-carnival for a new, young fanbase, who usually look something like this -

Which is fine by me. What it is not, however, is a true metal festival. To get this experience, you would have needed to attend the predecessor to Download, a festival I had the privilege to go to in 1995. From 1980 to 1996, Donington held Monsters Of Rock. The fans that attended THIS one-day festival…they ALL looked like this -

Donington Monsters of Rock was not polished. It was not safe. It wasn’t even pleased to see you. But goddamnit, the lineups were a metalhead’s wet dream. Started in 1980 by Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, the festival went from strength to strength during the golden age of metal, namely the 80s and early to mid 90s. The bill got progressively heavier through the years and became a watermark for bands to gauge their impact over here. If you made it to Monsters Of Rock, you’d cracked the UK. A quick glance at the headliners year by year shows the pedigree that this leafy English racetrack held – AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Pantera, ZZ Top, KISS, Black Sabbath – they all shook the stage at one time or another. Being in the crowd, now THAT was something else. Returning to the idea at the start of the paragraph that Monsters Of Rock was an intimidating and rough as sandpaper experience, you need to appreciate that metal and hard rock was still considered a radio-ignored subculture in the main. The mainstream acceptance of the extreme end of rock was a few years away, and fans acted accordingly. The whole day became a race to achieve both alcohol poisoning and life-threatening sunburn. Hot? Well, the black tshirt, denim and leather wasn’t such a good idea, was it? Can’t take it off though – not metal. Want a piss? Look around you. 70,000 people between you and the, ahem, “toilets”. The usual routine, I found out to my horror in ’95, was to relieve your bladder into a bottle/pint glass, then lob it behind you/at Stryper. Niiiiiice.

But it was all worth it, I promise. I WISH I could go back to those kinds of pure, non-corporate sponsored metal festivals. The idea that your parents would have a mild coronary before they contacted the police had they known what you’d been up to that Bank Holiday weekend – it all added to the idea that you were part of the relentlessly mocked, masochistic and tribal breed following the music you all adored. My experience of seeing Metallica, Slayer, Machine Head, Therapy?, Skid Row, White Zombie and Corrosion Of Conformity in ONE DAY that scorching summer day will live with me forever. I am sure that Download is one hell of a great weekend, and a new generation of metallers is having every bit as valid an experience as a rapidly-ageing sourpuss like myself did…but we’d have laughed at that cartoon dog logo, then reduced the merch stand to matchsticks. Here Goes Apology – More grovelling from the HGN camp.

Hi everyone.

We wanted to put out this post just to make apology and explanation for our erratic show publishing schedule. We know you think its because our ever increasing consumption of beer has made us social reprobates, but unfortunately not

Summer is for both of your hosts the most hectic time of the year. The world of Casey’s kitchen become chaos personified through the summer months, and Boz’s workload pretty much triples overnight when the sun comes out.

Please rest assured that we are still completely dedicated to the show as we absolutely love doing it, but often rationalising our schedules is very difficult, and we often find ourselves recording when we really should be sleeping. But hey this ain’t about us whingeing its simply a statement of fact. Very often the recording gets done but the edit time can be hard to find also.

So in a nutshell we are saying please bear with us through the coming months, we are gonna keep hitting you with our inane ramblings but it may well be a pleasant surprise when you actually get one
