We now have a Facebook group for UK based meet ups. When you’re on there, you’ll see we’ve also created an event for people planning on attending the next meet up.

There are going to be two meet ups in September 2011. The first one will be in Leeds UK, on the 3rd. We’ll be meeting for drinks as usual at the Victoria Hotel. For more details about locations, travel arrangements, and hotels,take a look at the forum thread for the meet up here.

I’ve been working on a new look for the website for a couple of months now. It’s far from complete, but I feel that even in these early stages it still looks far better than what we’ve got now.

The new theme is functional, just inconsistant, as it isn’t quite finished yet. As usual I’m getting a bit too excited about the new thing, and I’m really really unhappy with things as they are. So I’m seriously considering just switching it on. Now I know what you’re thinking, obviously I shouldn’t release the new version of the site until it’s completely finished, but I don’t think it’s all that simple.

Making something available before it’s finished has advantages and disadvantages, but I’m thinking that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. For a start, everything will look better pretty quickly and I won’t worry so much about new people finding the site. Then there’s the idea that it pretty much turns everyone into beta testers. It’s all well and good knowing that the site works well on my computer, but it might not work on yours. I won’t know that until I turn it on. In addition to that, it also lets you give me input as the work continues. Don’t like something? I can change it as I work.

To be honest I think I’m being influenced by the work of many tech companies around the world. It used to be that you made your game, tested it, and released it on a cassette tape (younger readers might need wikipedia). There was no internet so you couldn’t put out a patch or change anything. It had to work perfectly. Then, when there was an internet, we started getting products that aren’t quite finished, safe in the knowledge that there will be an update available soon.

Even Apple seem to have developed this idea of releasing a product that’s less functional than the version it replaced, with an aim to updating it later. If the perfection obsessed tech company can do that, then what’s the harm in me doing it?

You know what? I’ve decided to go ahead and do it. You’ll probably realise that because you’re looking at the new site right now. I’ll start a thread in the forums for you to start putting up bug reports and suggestions for anything I might have missed.

Please remember that you’re looking at the site as an unfinished product that will be updated at a rate of knots over the next couple of weeks. Eventually everything will work perfectly.

After weeks of messing around with the Facebook comment system, I’ve decided to dump it. It was nice when it worked, but that was something that only happened from time to time. Now we’re using the Disqus comment system. It’s much nicer than the Facebook one, and comes with more functionality. Now if you want to comment on a podcast or Simply Read post, you can log in with your Twitter, Facebook or Google accounts, rather than just Facebook.

I’m hoping that we won’t move off this system any time soon. Give it a try.

It is with a heavy heart and deepest regret  that I have to inform you that we have no choice but to cancel Simply Syndifest 2011. While the response to the idea was universally positive, when it came to people who could actually attend the event, things weren’t quite so good. As I write this we’ve sold around one sixth of the number of tickets we expected to sell. If we were to push forward with things we’d end up not having enough money to run the event, or enough of a crowd to enjoy it.

Those of you who have already bought your tickets will have your payment refunded in full as soon as possible, but please be aware it will be in around a week as we’re having to transfer money from our bank account back to PayPal in order to be able to carry out the refund. I will be contacting each of you individually tomorrow. Ha, we sold so few tickets I can contact everyone individually!

We are all absolutely heart broken that we aren’t able to run a festival this year, and I’d like to thank Casey and Katy for all the hard work they’ve done in setting things up. We do intend to try this again in the summer of 2012. With longer to plan and more importantly promote the event we think it’s possible.

I found just found out how underused our social network accounts are. The latest thing on Facebook was a post about the iPhone app, and the latest post on Twitter said Merry Christmas.

In an attempt to replicate some of the auto-post success I’ve had with my own blog, I have opened up a Simply Syndicated Posterous account. Now everything posted on the site, including this post, will be cross posted to Twitter and Facebook.

There’s now actually a point to following us on there. Links are on the right side of the site.

Good news! We’ve added Facebook comments to our website. Now when you look at a podcast or something on Simply Read you’ll see the Facebook Comments section below.

If you’re logged onto Facebook at the time you’ll be able to leave a comment on our site using your Facebook profile. The comment can be posted on your FB page.

In 2009, in aid of Comic Relief, we staged a whole 24 hours of podcasting. It was an amazing day featuring live versions of every show we made at the time, and some very special one-offs and even a brand new show called Crimes Against Food.

I have been talked to by total strangers, some of whom asked a very personal question. I’ve been flirted with (at least I think so). I have sore feet, spent way to much money and embarrassed myself in public (but that was helped by Greg. Thanks for that). In fact I’ve been a very busy boy.

Yesterday was the

Simply Syndicated meet up. I went to one a few months ago so I was looking forward to seeing old friends, meeting new people and generally have some fun.

What a night that was.

I’ll skip over meeting up with a few Syners at the hotel. Not because it wasn’t fun but because we just talked and said hello to each other. Well the only other thing that happened at this point was when the hotel messed up and gave Rich and Allison’s room away to Greg.

The person on the reception must have done something wrong as although Greg gave them his name, they gave him Allison’s room. She did do the group booking so her name must have been on the computer somewhere but obviously not in the right place in this case. What makes this even crazier is that Greg read what was written on his booking form thing (I’m so technical) and said that it was wrong. He was told “No it’s fine” so he went up to his room.

Cue Rich and Allison entering the hotel to find someone has booked into their room and they can’t check in. It wasn’t till we came back downstairs and found them still at the reception desk that we knew anything was wrong. But it was sorted out and we all got a room for the night.

And what a room. The hotel wasn’t posh. It was smart, charming, stylish but not posh. If it had been very posh I don’t think it would have been half as fun. It was just … nice.

Reading that back it doesn’t sound strong enough but don’t take it that way. Everything was nice. The sink in my bathroom was nice. The sheets on my bed were nice. The colour of the curtains was nice. There wasn’t anything in that room that I would have changed. Except one thing. And that will stay my secret as it’s to embarrassing/personal to tell anyone.

The only other thing that wasn’t nice was on the desk. That large iMac wasn’t nice, it was fantastic. It doubled as a computer, the TV and the radio. I think a few of us wanted to know what sort of set up the hotel has to make that happen. And the free wi-fi was a lovely bonus as well.

But our tale truly begins later on when we all got together in the early evening.

We started off at The Vic as we usually do on our nights out. The function room was booked so we were in the main bar. But we quickly started to spread ourselves around the room as our numbers grew and the evening went on. I don’t know if it was the laughter, the crazy in-jokes, or if we smell a bit but we soon had the whole of the back area to ourselves. Thinking about it the people on those tables might have moved as we kept glaring at them to leave so we could compendia another table. By the end of the night we owned almost a quarter of the bar.

The usual table jumping and seat swapping took place where everyone tried to talk to everyone else, even if it was only for a few minutes. I met all sorts of people and I’m sure the police will track them down soon enough.

I also met total strangers who talked to me and more shockingly I talked back. You see I went to the meet up wearing my kilt.

It started in the hotel. While I was waiting for the lift a couple were about to go into their room when they saw me. And asked the question everyone gets when you go out in a kilt.

“What’s under that”.

Thinking back it was the guy who seemed more interested in knowing if I had anything on under it. In a roundabout way he asked for proof. I should have lifted the back of my kilt up to show them but instead I just laughed and said I had to keep the mystery. But they asked again and I admitted the only thing under my kilt was my boots.

And they were not the only ones. A few people in the street shouted out things to me. But almost unexpectedly all the comments were positive. Everyone loved the kilt. And this is where I think the flirting starts. While I was at the bar waiting to be served someone said something about my kilt and I said something back and we were talking for a few seconds before I realised that he wasn’t one of us. I was talking to a stranger not a Syner. At first I thought it was down to the kilt but it wasn’t till I got back to my seat that I caught on that he might have been flirting with me. It wasn’t what he said but more how he said it.

I’ve been kicking myself for not going back and talking some more.

Talking about getting more.… Greg had his camera with him as usual. And for a laugh I lifted my legs wider when he went to take a picture of me. Now he thought that was funny as well so he dropped the camera lower for a joke.

Turns out it was low enough to catch sight of something hanging low enough.

And yes when he checked the picture and saw what was there he then decided to show it to everyone. And I do mean everyone. I think only two people didn’t see it and that was because they were out of the room at that time.

But everyone else got a good eyeful.

I was embarrassed to say the least. But it got me manly handshakes from quite a few of the men. You have to have some ba… nerves to go out in just a kilt. And I guess they wanted to say well done or something. I wasn’t paying that much attention. I was distracted as I could feel myself burn with blushing. I don’t blush at everything or anything but I will when it comes to having my bits shown off to everyone (the embarrassment comes from not being the one saying “have a look at this”).

Thankfully that was near the end of our time at the Vic. Instead of screaming from seeing my junk the others started screaming with laughter as Allison and Emma (with some help from a few others) acted out a little clip from

Eastenders for Karen.

I can’t stop laughing at that. It was crazy but such fun to watch. At the end where we clap you might not be able to tell but a few other people who were in the street join in. As soon as they realised it wasn’t a real fight they got curious. And when they caught on to what it was they seemed to enjoy it as well.

After such dramatic fiction we sadly descended into dramatic real life.

Most of us decided to go on to Fab, the sci-fi/horror film themed club for some dancing. Only once we got there we discovered it was Zombie Prom night. And it was packed. Almost everyone in the place was dressed as the undead. Some were just fake blood and ripped shirt kinda dressed up but some went way further than that. Turns out there was a contest for the best costume that might have explained some of those dressed up but I suspect some of those people had those costumes already.

The three contest winners were one eyed man, corpse bride, and undead Santa. Santa won the contest but I didn’t see him as I had just started playing pinball when they started announcing the winners.

Yet another couple (or two friends, I couldn’t tell) came up and said my kilt was awesome. Then he said for a guy I had some awesome legs. I can‘t be modest about my legs, they are awesome. People say my best feature is my smile but I say it‘s my legs. That was the highlight of my evening in Fab.

Because about ten minutes later we left after Greg was thrown out.

Someone who worked there claimed Greg was filming people. He wasn’t. He had taken someone’s photo but that was all. And it wasn‘t anything strange or freaky he just casually took a picture. But then the bouncer basically threw him out on the say so of the manageress.

He offered to prove he hadn’t filmed inside but they didn’t want to hear it. Rich wanted to know what was going on and was soon joined by Gloria, who just wanted a clear explanation, and some of the others soon followed. The bouncer got a little rude to Gloria until Will came over. For those who don’t know, Will is lovely and everyone knows he is a big softy at heart but he is also built. And if that bouncer had been any ruder or had tried to touch Gloria he would have stopped being so sweet and punched him out.

We don’t take kindly to having our friends mistreated so we quickly gathered up our things and left on-mass never to return (at least that’s the general consensus at the moment).

And then while we were in the street complaining about Fab some random drunk guy came over to Boz and tried starting a fight. Boz is the last guy to start picking a fight and again not one you would want to fight with in any case. It was obvious no matter what he said or did the guy was drunk enough to take anything Boz said as fighting words so he kept quiet and tried to just walk away. Only the drunk guy wouldn’t drop it.

So Jen took over. Now she isn’t built like Will or Boz (if you see what I mean) but it was a fight all right. Only it was with words and ideas. I don’t know what she said but she got the angry drunk to at least calm down enough to stop harassing us and walk away in under twenty seconds. It was like she was a super hero.

She won a Captain Morgan Stamp of Approval for that.

By this time it was about one in the morning and our choices for another bar or club to visit was running out. We decided in the end to go back to the hotel and try out the hotels bar with it’s legendary views.

Except by the time we got back it was closed.

Sadly this brings our meet up adventure to an end. With no other clubs near us, the late hour (it was two in the morning by then), and the fact we were all standing outside our hotel, we decided to call it a night. We made plans for getting breakfast in the morning and said goodnight.

Well there was one more thing. As we went inside we saw that some man had just called the lift. Jen and Laura got to the lift first followed by Rich. But then a few more of us got there and piled in. Rich said something like …

“I bet you didn‘t think there would be this many of us when you held the lift did you“.

“No“ said the man “I was hoping you would be getting out first and I would get to talk to these lovely ladies alone”

Then we hit the guy’s floor first and he got out. He wasn’t creepy (at least not in a threatening way) but it was so unexpected you just had to smile. He wasn’t a hot guy (at least in that condition) and in his fifties but he seemed to think two attractive twenty something young women would be ok with him hitting on them both at the same time.

I don’t know who you are lift man, I don’t think you’ll ever see this, maybe you were just joking, but I just wanted to thank you for making that day a little better. It still makes me smile.

PS. Dean said that this morning he saw lift man again (in the lift where else) when he was going to check out. Only this time he stank. I said after what I saw last night I’m not surprised and he must be sweating a few bottles of something out.

We payed for our hosting on a monthly basis as most people do, with our account being billed around the 14th of every month. As I cancelled half way through last month I never expected to hear from them again. However today a payment was made from our PayPal account to SimpleHelix for a months hosting services. I checked our account on their site and saw that the hosting was indeed cancelled. Why would I be billed? So I contacted the technical support department.

The response? They don’t cancel the PayPal subscriptions when they cancel the hosting account so it’s my fault that they’ve been payed. Will they return the money? No! I am now $45 in credit they say, with a company that I just left due to poor service.

I don’t know if I’ll get our money back. It’s quite a lot and with our store being down for a few weeks it really lands us right in it. So I’d just like to say thank you to Simple Helix, you might just make it the first month ever that some podcast accounts close.

It turns out that our store is using over 100GB per month of data. That’s far more than even simplysyndicated.com and this site runs all our RSS feeds! That uses a lot of data. After checking the logs it shows that the 100GB was used by under 1000 people. That means that our store system, Magento, uses an obscene amount of data to work.

There isn’t much I can do about the existing store hosting account. It really is over its limit and won’t come back on line until the end of this month. Obviously that’s not very good so I’ve set up a new hosting account with a different provider and am now in the process of moving things over. This can take time, as I write this I’m waiting for the domain name to change over to the new account before I can even start trying to transfer things.

With any luck I’ll be able to get things moved and back up and running as they were yesterday. If things go well all user accounts and purchases will be available.

The worst case senario is that I can’t transfer anything and I have to start again from scratch. If that’s the case please don’t worry about any files that you’ve bought but haven’t downloaded yet. I have complete records on who has bought what, so if you email me I’ll be able to link you to the files you’re missing. Hopefully we won’t have to do that.

Keep watching this space for updates on the situation. Sorry for the problems, it’s driving me nuts too.

UPDATE 1: Our existing host suggest that I buy a dedicated server for our store at a cost of $449 per month. To put things in perspective simplysyndicated.com costs $4.99 per month. I have already signed up for an account that will cost us £16 per month. I don’t think we’ll be getting the dedicated server.

UPDATE 2: I worked out that according to our stats, each visitor to our store is using over 100MB of data just by browsing the site. Obviously users can’t be using that much data, the site would be so slow to load that you just wouldn’t bother. The hosts are looking in to it.

UPDATE 3: It looks like an update that was performed in June is to blame for the problems. I hate updates. You get something working great and then somebody comes along and tells you they can make it work better. Then like an idiot I go and do the upgrade just to get rid of that “there’s an update available” thing that pops up every time I log in.

UPDATE 4: Couple of bits here, It’s looking more and more like the recent update is what caused the problems.When all is well, you click on a link to download a file. The store system then looks up that file in the database and connects you with it on AmazonS3. I think that the store was downloading the file, then delivering it to you instead, which would account for the sudden spurt in our bandwidth use. Our hosts have been good enough to increase our bandwidth so I can get in and have a poke around. Unfortunately I had already started rebuilding the site on another hosting account so the domain name had already been redirected. I’m now waiting for it to change back so I can get in to the old system and at least make a backup of the database so I can maybe restore it to a new install if necessary. I’m tired, cold and hungry. UPDATE 5: I’m back in the old system and the domain name has propagated. As far as we know the store is back up and running for now. If you’ve bought files that you haven’t downloaded yet I very seriously recommend that you go download them right away. I don’t know how long things will be up and running for. Really, go do it NOW. If you only ever follow one piece of advice I ever give you, please let it be now when I tell you to go and download all the files that you’ve bought and haven’t downloaded yet. Is that clear enough? I want to make very sure that you’ve understood what I’m saying to you. If you have bought a downloadable show from musicalmousemat.com but you haven’t downloaded it yet, then you must go there now and download it. Right now, not in ten minutes, the site might not be there in ten minutes. Also if you want to buy something and download it right away you can do.

UPDATE 6: It’s definitely doing that thing where the server downloads the file then delivers it to you. I got a chart off our stats that shows a list of different file sizes and what percentage of total downloads those files made up. Seeing as the store is just a normal website you should expect to see file sizes around the 1MB and less getting most of the requests. Things like text and small images. However on our stats a whopping 63% of files requested are over 100MB. Strangely most of the files we sell are around 110MB in size. Funny that isn’t it. I’m still not sure what has caused this problem, but it looks like the easiest thing to do would be to reinstall the store system and restore a backup of the database. In my mind it makes sense, it’s just that it’s a bit like when they try to reboot Jurassic Park and I’m the daft idiot that has to go out with the Raptors and turn the power back on. Still at least that’s better than being stuck with the kid who thinks she can work the computer because it’s running UNIX. Yeah, all the UNIX machines are the same.

UPDATE 7: Things just aren’t working properly, I need to do a complete reinstall of the whole store system. With any luck I’ll be able to restore user accounts and purchases from a backup. If it turns out that this doesn’t work then everything will have to start from scratch again. That means you’ll lose your account on the store and any purchases you’ve made. Please don’t worry. If you’ve bought things that you haven’t downloaded yet I’ll be able to hook you up with the files. I still have records of who has bought what, I just don’t have the records of what you’ve actually downloaded. If you find yourself unable to download anything you’ve payed for, please get in touch with me. In the mean time the store will be off line, but it will be coming back asap.

UPDATE 8 21:22 4th Sep – I’ve managed to move everything over to the new server. How well things are working will come over time. All the products have been ported over, but all of the downloadable ones have had their URLs removed, so I need to go through each and every episode available for sale and retype the URL of the file. That will take a little while and it will hurt. I’ll maybe watch a Bond movie while I do it. I also managed to save all the user accounts. Right now as far as I can tell you should be able to log on and see your account. Of course trying to download things that you’ve bought before I put all the URLs back will only result in you using up downloads. The look and theme of the store will be the last thing to be fixed. It’s important but not as important as basic store functionality. Things should be back to normal before too long.

UPDATE 9 03:35 8th Sep – The last four days have been quite an experience I can tell you. Now I look back over update 8 I see that it sounds so hopeful and optimistic. If only I’d known then what I know now. When I got everything installed on the new server I thought it was all working perfectly, then I tried buying something and downloading it. Downloading the file failed and I was left with a 0kb file. That has pretty much been the state of things for the last four days. I have been blessed with a couple of things. First there was hosting company support that truly helped, a bit. Then there’s Simon whom you’ll know from the World 1 Stage 1 podcast. I can’t praise him enough. He spent the last couple of days working on the problem and has managed to get things up and running tonight. I would like to thank Simon publicly for that. Anyway, the upshot of that is that we now have a working store. All that remains if for me to put things in it for people to buy and make it look nice. Things will happen in that order. In test restores of data from the old store I have managed to restore everybody’s account on the store. Unfortunately past purchases have not carried forward. That means we might be stuck with a few of you who have bought things and not downloaded them. If that has happened to you please watch this post for more information soon. I have a record of what people have bought but not what has been downloaded. I’ll be able to sort you out by way of coupon codes and the like. Panic over for now, normal service should resume by the end of the week. Then I can concentrate on making shows rather than inputting URLs.

UPDATE 10 02:45 9th Sep – About 24 hours on and things are still working. User accounts have been restored so you can sign on and buy things. As I’ve said before there isn’t a whole lot for people to buy yet but it’s all coming online slowly. Remember that your past purchases have not been saved. If you’re missing any downloads please email and I’ll send you a coupon for free downloads once everything is up in the store. I’ll also be adding download bundles of Paddy’s TV Surprise and the 24 Hour Podcast.

It works exactly like listening to our live shows except that it works twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

You can listen on your computer using a variety of applications, as well as most modern smart phones and of course the iPod Touch.

At the time of writing this the forum is up and running as it should be. There might be a few problems with the podcast feeds and a couple of other things, but like I say, that will be sorted out very soon. If you see something that doesn’t work please don’t panic. I am aware of everything that isn’t working as it should.

Thank you for holding on for new content until the move is complete. I know there are some of you who are itching for the latest episode, just as there are people itching to post them.

As always with this sort of thing nothing goes to plan. I’m expecting everything that can go wrong to go wrong. If that happens please don’t panic. Even if we end up being away for a couple of days, which is very unlikely, we will be back.

If everything does go to plan, when we come back you won’t notice any change. The site should run a bit quicker and more importantly won’t crash when more than a handful of people turn up. Plus the cost saving will allow us to bring you some more interesting and fun things.

First of all, we are lucky to be welcoming three new shows to the network. Here Goes Nothing, Nerd Hurdles, and TechSupportRich. You’ll be able to see their show pages on Friday. If you already subscribe to the main Simply Syndicated podcast feed then you’ll be able to download the new shows automatically.

Next we are preparing to launch Simply Read. It will be a new section of our website featuring articles by members of the Simply Syndicated community and producers of our shows. Look out for that launching on Friday.
