Our retrospective of the sporting year continues, with help from Greg Blanchard (from the “Inappropriate Conversations” podcast). In this second part, we review the sports that garner headlines in North America – Baseball, Ice Hockey, Basketball and (American) Football. But don’t worry, we also look back on the last 12 months in football – or soccer for those of a Transatlantic persuasion. Read More »

GEISH 45 – Year Review: 2011 Part One w/Emma Hyam

geish-45-year-review-2011-part-one-wemma-hyam

Instead of having one huge 3 hour show like last year, we decided to break the year down into pieces. I won’t say bite sized because we still go on for a while. Anyway here is part one. This one covers Rugby Union, Rugby League and Tennis. We are joined by Emma Hyam.

Also sorry for some slight audio issues during the Rugby Union section, it seems even the Internet knows that union sucks. Read More »

GEISH 44 – Basil D’Oliveira’s Ashes Century in 1968

geish-44-basil-doliveiras-ashes-century-in-1968

Described by journalist, Peter Oborne as, “The most important innings in the history of cricket”, we review how a South African, playing for England, wielded a cricket bat and eventually, changed the world.

D’Oliveira was raised in apartheid South Africa, and came to England where his cricketing talent flourished. So much so, that it resulted in him being selected in the England squad to tour South Africa, causing an international incident. Read More »

GEISH 41 – British Olympic Golds: 2002 Curling and 2004 Coxless Fours

geish-41-british-olympic-golds-2002-curling-and-2004-coxless-fours

After successfully escaping from the HGN dungeon, I, Jonathan, return to give the listeners what they have always wanted: A story about British Curling Gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. For one night, all of Britain became curling experts as 6 million of us tuned into watch the Brits, led by Rhona Martin, as they faced Switzerland in a tense final.

Then Shane takes us to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where Matthew Pinsent won his fourth gold by winning rowings’ coxless fours final, despite looking as good as beaten by the Canada team.

After the closing music Shane also shares what he thinks of the end of “Here Goes Nothing”, and we discuss some of the action that took place in that night’s Europa League.

GEISH 40 – Usain Bolt at the 2008 Olympics w/Will Tristram

geish-40-usain-bolt-at-the-2008-olympics-wwill-tristram

I welcome Simply Syndicated stalwart Will Tristram back on the show to discuss Usain Bolt shifting the tectonic plates of sprinting for ever. Bolt’s achievements during the summer of 2008 thrilled a golbal audience and left some people (literally) speechless.

As expected when Will comes on board, there was surplus material that didn’t make the final show. However, keep listening after the closing theme for discussions about swearing & libel, and an England cricket match. We also speculate on Jonathan Wilkinson’s whereabouts.

GEISH 39 – Legend Series: Eric Cantona w/Mary Freer

geish-39-legend-series-eric-cantona-wmary-freer

With Jonathan in continued exile, I’ve made the most of his absence and snuck Manchester United supporter, Mary Freer onto the show to discuss the career of her favourite footballer, Eric Cantona.

We traverse the highs and lows of the mercurial and temperamental Frenchman, and investigate how his pervasive influence – both good and bad – has affected the English game up to the present day.

GEISH 38 – Top 5 Underachievers w/Emma Hyam

geish-38-top-5-underachievers-wemma-hyam

The times are a-changin’ here at the “Greatest Events”. A costly bet has caused the podcast to be down a host for an indefinite period, so I brought in Emma Hyam from the “Blue Box Blog” to assist me with our latest top 5 countdown.

The topic for this edition is underachievers; those people born with bundles of talent, but ended up with little to show for it. We have to apologise for the audio problems on this episode, we’ll do our best to ensure it never happens again. Read More »
