Why Microsoft Has Made Developers Horrified of Coding for Windows 8
http://m.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/06/microsoft-developers-windows-8/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed
(Andrew) Very good bits from comments all that are true, just the media being extremest again, this is a good thing moving towards open standards;
###The presentation was referring to the apps & widgets layer. Windows is moving towards having an app/widget platform that uses HTML5/Javascript. Regular software development for hard-core Windows programs (vs. an app or widget) will be still in .NET. They’re not dumping that.
###Did anybody bother to watch the rest of the videos microsoft released before writing this article?
Win 8 still contains the win 7 interface and runs regular old windows apps.
In fact, both the classic taskbar/desktop combo and the new tiles can be onscreen at once, and the amount of screen space between the two can be customized with a simple drag of the divider.
All the win 8 tiles system really is is a fancy widget layer. devs are still going to use the same tools for most applications.
Windows 8 apps be HTML 5.
###Any developer who lives their lives as though their specific technology is going to be around forever is delusional. That’s not the way development works.
Next, “gadgets” in Windows have always been driven by HTML and Javascript. There’s nothing new here.
Finally, the solution is this: you learn to program whatever is available. It’s a poor developer indeed who can’t program anything but .NET and refuses to learn anything else.
###If I were to spend time developing for these new APIs in Win8, it should be a GOOD thing that its HTML5. Its something that in theory, should be able to work cross platform with some tweaks. Plus, most web developers should be able to jump right in and feel sort of at home.
People bash MS for not using standards and now they are being bashed for using standards. I don’t follow.
I might be the minority, but I wish all mobile apps used HTML5 with platform specific APIs to interact with the phone OS. Think of how easy it would be to develop for Android, Apple, and Windows Phones.
