Hi Chaps
Its time for me to get ethereal and back up my extensive photo and video library to the cloud. So far I have my aperture library copied to an external drives stored elsewhere in the house and also my photos copied as jpegs and RAW files onto a windows system.
I got “appleised” about 2 years ago and my iMac is now my goto computer. It is connected to a drobo drive with 8 terabytes and my main aperture library resides on this, not the iMacs hard drive.
The drobo is partitioned into space for time machine and a larger space for media files.
So multiple redundancy, …….I think. I doubt a thief would have time to find and nick all the attached and unattached drives and I’m covered for a good degree of mechanical failure.
Which leaves just something like fire or earthquake which could destroy the family archive. New Zealand is outrageously seismic and we have had one major shake where I live with no small amount of damage caused.
I suspect you are thinking “recommend Carbonite” and about to move on to a pithier e-mail but………

| Hello and thank you for contacting Carbonite Customer Support. No currently the only service we offer for an Apple operating system is the standard home subscription which only backs up the user generated content on any internal hard drives you have.
Please let us know if you need additional assistance. Sincerely, Carbonite Customer Support www.carbonite.com |

| 1 – Can I timetable back ups on a mac?2- I have a Drobo drive connected to my iMac 27 via USB will the full home version allow back ups from this
many Thanks |
…………………………………………………………………………………………
You read that from bottom to top yes?
So it looks like with a Mac I can only “cloud” (is that a verb?-shudders with a moment of self loathing) my iMac’s hard drive and nothing else. Can that be right? I think you use external drives and back ups so you would have come across this limitation.
The Question for tech it or leave it – if you want to cut to the chase
Anyhoo if not Carbonite then what would you recommend?
KInd regards Joe.
PS If you are wondering why my aperture library is only on the drobo; I need all the space on the iMac HD for video files. Whilst I can and do archive video files on the drobo neither USB or Firewire transfers huge files quickly enough between ext drive and iMac to allow efficient seamless workflow.

Hey guys,
I’m starting university in three weeks and need to buy a laptop. I’m studying Medicine, so would only be using it for typing up essays and notes, browsing the web, checking e-mails and streaming video of iPlayer/Netflix and the like. The machine would have to last for at least 3 years, and would ideally be in the £400-£600 range, though could probably scrape £850 if necessary What specs would you recommend in terms of RAM, hard drive, processors etc, and do you have any specific laptops that you’d recommend?
Keep up the great work, I’ve been a long time listener to Simply Syndicated, (from at least the Things We Hate Special of MYSS!) and credit it for keeping me sane throughout my education.
David
